Today we woke up early and prepared for our trip to Door County. We packed our small suitcase, cooler and took the lovely gift basket my sister equipped us with and hit the open road. Door County is about a 2 hour drive from Appleton and is in what we like to call the thumb of the state (if Wisconsin was a hand, Door County would be the thumb).
The drive up was a very scenic one where we got to see many small towns throughout Wisconsin. As we got to the Door County area, I had to get a napkin out of the glove box to wipe the drool off Emily’s chin as she saw all the stores that she was going to visit over the next two days. We made our way through Egg Harbor and Fish Creek on our way to our destination of Sister Bay. We stayed at this really neat inn called the Church Hill Inn. The people there we all very friendly and the room we stayed is was golf themed. They had some vintage clubs in the corner so we took them for a spin! As you can see Emily has been working on her short game this summer! But that was way too much guy stuff for this getaway; we needed to get out and hit some stores.
Before “getting our shop on,” we decided to grab some lunch at a waterfront cafe called Fred & Fuzzy’s Waterfront Bar and Grill. The food and atmosphere was nice and relaxing. After our steak sandwiches, we were properly nourished for the quest to find good souvenirs. We spent the better part of the afternoon going from store to store looking at nick nacks and what have you. Actually, I thought we were in the same store the entire day, but Emily informed me what we had indeed gone to more than one store. You know guys, everything looks the same to us!
It was getting to be time to get ready for dinner, so we headed back to the hotel for a little relaxation before the fish boil. We were told on our well planned itinerary from my sister Sara that we were to be at the fish boil early, so we arrived promptly at 4:45. This was a great thing because after checking in we went around back where they were actually boiling the fish. It was a pretty cool experience. They heated this large black kettle and put potatoes, onions, and white fish from Lake Michigan in a pot to boil. After 30 minutes and a pretty interesting presentation, they removed the food from the kettle, and we all went inside to eat. The food was very good ,but I will of course leave the details to Emily.
After dinner we took a beautiful drive along the waterfront on our way to see the Peninsula Players perform Tom, Dick and Harry. When we arrived at the theater, it was like an enchanted garden right out of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” There were walking trails that led theater goers past the bar down to beautiful Green Bay. It was a great experience, and the show was very funny. After the show we both could barely stand from being tired, so we headed back to the hotel and called it a night. Hope to see you again tomorrow!
