After struggling to wake up in Chicago, we looked outside to find our first rainy day of the trip. Our objective was to go to downtown Chicago and shop and take pictures, but I heard words that I thought I would never hear come out of Emily’s mouth, “I don’t care if I shop or not”! The paramedics arrived to find I only had passed out for a few minutes; they said it was due to shock!
With the weather not on our side we decided to make our way to Appleton earlier than expected. On our way we stopped a couple times in search of the perfect lunch spot. We first stopped at the Apple Holler that was on Highway 41 just north of the Illinois-Wisconsin border. All around the restaurant there were animals that you can see to the left. It was 11:30 and we were ready for lunch, but they were still serving breakfast so we continued on our journey. We stopped about 30 minutes up the highway at a little place called the Sawmill Inn. We had some pretty good food that would hold us over until we got to Appleton.
When we arrived in Appleton we found out that my Dad had just won the Buttes Des Mortes Club Championship! That was pretty exciting news, so we decided what better way to celebrate that victory than some Tom’s Drive In! Emily got her cheese curd fix, Dad got the gourmet perchwich, I got the Big Tom and my Mom couldn’t believe that we weren’t eating the chicken and corn on the cob she had prepared for the evening. Oh well — we all had a great dinner and I am sure Emily will have a fantastic food review for Tom’s Drive In!
That was pretty much our day in a nutshell. We are in Appleton for a couple of days and will be heading to Door County on Tuesday and Wednesday so stay tuned for pictures and more journal entries.
